Why We’re Called the Curry Smugglers

It all started with a trip back from India and we’d gone a little overboard (as you do) bringing back freshly ground spices: turmeric that glowed golden, chilli powder with a serious punch, and secret blends hand-mixed by our aunties. To us, it was just a bit of taste and tradition for our own kitchen.

But when we landed at Heathrow, we were stopped by a customs officer for a random search. He opened our bags, caught a whiff, and grinned:
“What’s all this then—curry smuggling?”

We all burst out laughing. He let us through with a wink, and that cheeky moment became legend. We told the story over and over again—to friends, family, anyone who’d listen. And every time, someone would say:
“That would be a brilliant name for a business one day.”

Turns out, they were right.

That moment captured so much of what we’re about: flavour, fun, a little mischief—and a deep love for the kind of snacks and spices that remind us of home. So when it came time to start our own brand, the name was already written for us.

And now here we are—Curry Smugglers Snacks, proudly packing the boldest, most nostalgic Indian snacks into beer cans (yes, beer cans!) and sharing them across the UK.

We are now on our final push on Crowdcube, raising investment to take our story—and our snacks—even further. If you believe in flavour, fun, and the power of good food to bring people together, we’d love your support.

Please invest, share, and help us get over the line. The smugglers need you. 💛

With gratitude and spice,
Ruby & Steve

Big News: We’re Now @rake_bar , London’s Craft Beer Mecca

We’re excited to announce that Curry Smugglers Snacks are now stocked at The Rake, one of the UK’s most influential and respected craft beer venues — located beside London’s iconic Borough Market.

The Rake isn’t just a pub — it’s a craft beer landmark. It was one of the first pub in London to champion independent breweries. With a constantly rotating tap list, a legendary bottled beer fridge, and a loyal crowd of beer enthusiasts, it’s a mecca for flavour — and exactly the kind of place where our snacks belong.

This is another great step forward as we continue building a brand that stands out — both in flavour and in format. From Selfridges to DROPS Margate, and now The Rake, our retail journey continues to grow.

But we still need your support.
We’ve made progress, but we’re not over the line yet. If you believe in what we’re creating, there’s still time to invest and be part of this journey.

“What Does Desi Mean?” — Great Question!
We’ve had a few people ask… “What does Desi mean?” Love that question.

💡 Desi (pronounced day-see) is a word we use in South Asian communities to describe our own — our culture, our people, our food, our vibes. Whether you’re from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, or Sri Lanka — if it’s Desi, it’s home.

For us, Desi snacks mean the stuff we grew up eating — the crunchy, spicy, iconic snacks that have been passed around family gatherings for generations. But let’s be honest… the way they’re usually sold in the UK? A bit sad. Plastic bags. Dusty shelves. No personality.

That’s why we started Curry Smugglers Snacks. Desi snacks — but done differently. Packed in bold beer-style cans, built for modern retail, gifting, and standing out.

Right now, we’re raising to scale up — moving from tiny hand-packed batches to our own canning line, a proper production space, and a crew to help us grow.

💛 Back us. Share us. Join us. Help us create something awesome — a British Asian brand that puts Desi snacks where they belong: front and centre.

Any questions? Drop them below — always happy to chat snacks, business, or the opportunity. 🙌🏽
