A British Asian Snack Brand Born From Our Roots
We started Curry Smugglers because we kept seeing the same problem.
The South Asian snacks we grew up around were full of life, flavour and character, but the way they were being sold often felt flat. Some of the most exciting snacks on the shelf were still sitting in clear plastic bags, tucked away in world food aisles, with very little personality around them.
That never made sense to us.
South Asian food culture is colourful, generous and full of energy. It is family gatherings, chai on the table, Bombay Mix being passed around, crispy bites before dinner, roadside snack stalls, market noise, spice, crunch and chaos in the best possible way.
We wanted to build a brand that captured that feeling properly. Not another quiet snack brand. Not something beige. Not something that watered itself down to fit in. Something with attitude.
Curry Smugglers was founded by us, Steve and Ruby Dass. We are a husband-and-wife team based in Margate, Kent, and the brand is deeply connected to our British Asian upbringing.
The name came from that cheeky family feeling of bringing flavour with you wherever you go. In many South Asian families, snacks travel. Food travels. Suitcases come back with "just a few bits". There is always something being carried, packed, shared, posted or smuggled through the family network. That spirit made us smile, and it felt right.
Why Put Indian Snacks in Cans?
The can started as a slightly mad idea, but the more we thought about it, the more it made sense.
Most snacks get crushed, lost or forgotten in flimsy bags. A can protects the crunch, keeps things fresh, and immediately makes people stop and look. It also changes how the product feels. Suddenly, it is not just something hiding at the back of the cupboard. It becomes giftable, stackable, shareable and proper shelf-worthy.
People often ask if it is beer. We get it. It looks like a beer can. But that double take is part of the fun. Once people realise it is packed with Bombay Mix, Chakli, Pakora or Masala Corn, the reaction is usually the same: a smile, a laugh, and then, "That's brilliant." That is exactly the kind of moment we wanted to create.
Our South Asian Snack Range
Our first range takes classic South Asian snack favourites and gives them a modern Curry Smugglers twist.
Bombay Mix — the crunchy classic that belongs at every gathering.
Chakli — crisp, savoury and seriously moreish.
Pakora — inspired by the comfort and spice of a proper rainy-day favourite.
Masala Corn — with a tangy, spicy kick that brings proper street-snack energy.
These are not shy snacks. They are made for people who want flavour, crunch and character in every handful.
Built From the Ground Up
Like most start-ups, Curry Smugglers has been built with more graft than glamour. There was no huge team, no big corporate machine and definitely no endless budget. Just the two of us, a strong idea, a lot of testing, plenty of late nights, and a belief that this category had been overlooked for too long.
Seeing Curry Smugglers picked up by brilliant independent retailers, and then places like Selfridges and Fortnum & Mason, has been a huge moment for us. But what matters most is when someone picks up a can, understands it instantly, and feels the energy behind it. That is when we know it is working.
More Than Just Snacks
For us, Curry Smugglers is about more than putting Indian-inspired snacks into interesting packaging. It is about taking something familiar from our culture and presenting it with confidence. It is about making people look again at a category they thought they already knew. It is about showing that South Asian flavours can sit proudly in premium shops, bars, food halls, hampers and homes without losing their soul.
We want Curry Smugglers to feel fun, proud and full of personality. A modern Desi snack brand with flavour in every sense.
Thanks For Being Here
This is our first blog, so we wanted to start with the story behind the brand. Curry Smugglers began with a simple feeling: these snacks deserved more love, more attention and a lot more swagger.
We are still early in the journey, but the reaction so far has been incredible. Every order, every stockist, every message and every person who says, "I've never seen anything like this before," keeps us going.
Thanks for being part of it.
